NC moped law goes into effect July 1

If insurance and tags are required for mopeds, I say level the field and make it a requirement for anyone that rides with a bicycle club as well. I would much rather be behind a moped, that I can see around, than I had a group of 10+ cyclists spread all over the lane of travel, blocking any sightlines so a motorist could safely pass.

Now get insurance speed up or get off the da*n road you are a traffic hazard.

Since this is a new law and the offices were not ready to even start processing these registrations until July 1, they will probably have to allow a few days for people to be able to get to DMV to get the plates. Mine was in for some maintenance until after 7 pm tonight and without it, I have no way around so I will be going Monday to get my plate. I had asked about getting my plate prior to July 1 but the offices were not able to do them yet, at least not prior to last week and they were on vacation all last week.

As for the vest idea, I already wear one at night. Plus my brother is adding additional brake lights on the rear and fog lights on the lower front edge so I can see the road better at night without the added light bothering oncoming traffic.

Time to invest in electric bicycles.

Didn't the Democrats pass this?

Technically it's a bi-partisan bill, originally sponsored by 3 Republicans and 1 Democrat. Then 9 more Republicans and 4 more Democrats signed on as sponsors.

It passed with 39 Ayes and 8 Nays. 6 Democrats and 2 Republicans voted against it.

I still say bicycles should have to pay a user fee to ride the hiways.I saw one today with his stretchy clothes on ride right thru a stop sign. A body could get hurt that way.

Will it be inforced? I saw two today with no tags.

I think they should have to go through a safety inspection and pass some sort of EPA standard also. Stick some kind of probe up the muffler pipe. I will admit I am a drunk Republican but I'm not lazy.

Here's most likely what happened. Some lazy bunch of drunk republican lawmakers said what recent law from some other state can we copy paste this session so we can spend more time over at the wh*re house, which means the hotel where the most lobbyists are staying.

Someone must been happy with the new law. They went up the road last night beeping their weak horn at every house they pass.

My electric bicycle requires no tag, insurance or registration of any kind plus now I'm not paying the highest gasoline tax in the South. Thanks republicans, now can I fix you some bird's nest soup with D. Trumps wig.

Tagged or not....If you are on a motorcycle, bicycle or moped and you wreck, it isn't going to be good. More than likely you are going to be injured. Not safe with today's traffic.

I hope they include all those darn bicycles that are taking up the hiway.

Don't hold your breath.

And for some on here, Don't hold your breathe.

Moped insurance will be required on July 1,2016.

Kerry Hall, spokeswoman for the N.C. Department of Insurance, said cost estimates for moped insurance range from $80 to $380 per year for average drivers, with premiums of $700 or more a year for those with bad driving habits.

as a matter of fact maybe moped riders should be required to wear a reflective safety vest because these riders are hard to see especially at night/
