Christmas in the Commons

Public Event

Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018

Due to the weather forecast, Wilkesboro's "Christmas in the Commons" event is rescheduled to Saturday, Dec. 8th from 4 - 6 pm.

The Town of Wilkesboro will usher in the holiday season on Saturday, December 8th with “Christmas in the Commons,” a festive community celebration from 4:30-6:30 pm in Downtown Wilkesboro!

As the Wilkes County Christmas Parade travels through Downtown Wilkesboro, “Christmas in the Commons” will kick-off an evening of fun for the entire family. Kids of all ages will enjoy free train rides with the Little Mountain Railroad Co. Bring your camera for photo opportunities in a giant inflatable snow globe! Additional activities include a candy-themed inflatable bounce house and obstacle course, face painting, ornament crafts, and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Lively selections of favorite Christmas tunes will fill the Carolina West Wireless Community Commons and Heritage Square. The Todd Wright Quintet will perform Christmas-inspired music before and after the lighting of the Heritage Square Christmas Tree, which is scheduled for 6:30 pm. In addition to the seasonal festivities, donations of canned goods and new and gently used coats will be accepted for distribution to local agencies focused on aiding those in need of assistance.

Following the tree lighting, a special outdoor showing of “The Polar Express” will be held in the Carolina West Wireless Community Commons starting at 6:45 pm. Heaters will be placed throughout the site and refreshments will be available for purchase. The 2004 animated film is based on the beloved children’s book about a young boy who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole and discovers that the wonder of Christmas never fades for those who believe. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for lawn seating.

Hot beverages, refreshments, and gift items will be available for purchase from The Artisan Cafe, The Kettlecorn Man, Pepe's Tacos, The Wilkes Heritage Museum, and more!

The Historic Downtown Wilkesboro Merchants Association will host an open house throughout downtown with extended shopping hours on Saturday, Dec. 1st! Please visit the association's Facebook page for information about participating merchants, free giveaways, and more!

This event will also mark the lighting of Heritage Square and the Carolina West Wireless Community Commons with new Christmas decorations sponsored by the Town of Wilkesboro. Snowflakes, icicles, wreaths, and Christmas trees throughout these spaces will create a magical winter wonderland experience enjoyed during the Christmas season and winter months.

Admission to all events is free. For additional information, please contact Wilkesboro Town Hall at 336-838-3951.
