But you still feel the need to come to GoWilkes and voice your opinion about matters that don't concern you, reminds me of a saying, you can take the boy out of Wilkes but you can't take Wilkes out of the boy.

Just stop buying anything in Wilkes and let that place die a painless death. Nothing there anyone wants or needs. If my family didn't live there i wouldn't even drive through that **** hole

If we combine the two, how many possible fire station locations would they have bought between them that never gets used for its stated intent at time of spending the public's money?

Everyone in Wilkes shops on 421. There are more people in that area.

If they survived on local customers and drive by traffic was irrelevant, why spend the extra money?

Look at Dollar General, as an example. The location on 421 is worth $927,300:

And the one on 268 East is worth $390,420:

Why would Dollar General spend $537,000 more for a building on 421, if they could get the exact same number of local customers away from 421?

Why would Lowes Hardware be in a store worth $9.1 million, if they could be on Brushy Mtn Road, get just as many customers, and save $8 million?

That's not to say that someone would drive from Charlotte to Wilkesboro to shop at the Dollar General, of course. But just because something isn't the final destination doesn't mean that it's not a spot along the way.

I think the old lady is right about this one.

All large retailers want to be in the same location. Do you really think that people from Winston would want to shop at our little Belks? Or someone from Charlotte would want to go to our Big lots or our Lowe's? We have nothing to offer here .

So you believe that all of the chain stores and restaurants survive primarily on local business? If that's the case, why do they spend millions of dollars for property on 421 instead of, I don't know, down 18 or 268?

Taxpayers in NW already pay more than Wilkesboro.

421 is now a pass through for people going to the mountains. How many people do you actually think stop here to shop? All we have is a belks, Walmart, Kohl's. They might stop for gas and get a sandwich, but you certainly are not talking about a lot. More Wilkes county citizens are shopping on that dangerous road. they should be considering what is best for the taxpayers and than the people passing through. They are coming from larger cities with more shopping opportunities than here in Wilkes.

A by pass is a bad idea for Wilkes. People would use it to by pass Wilkes. A by pass would be a great idea for commuters from out of county. It would help Boone.

antithesis

But I do not know how the person thinks a by pass would hurt wilkesboro. It would probably go in the vicinity close to where it is now.

Wilkes would be nothing but a pass-through between Winston and Boone. People on 421 would have no incentive to take an exit and eat in Wilkes when they're minutes away from Boone, so all of the chain restaurants and gas stations would suffer (or die) pretty quickly.

No way would it be in NW. the business would still be in Wilkesboro.

If you're saying what I think you're saying... if the towns are merged and what's currently Wilkesboro loses a huge tax base, then the local government would still need to make a certain amount of money to pay for services. So residents would have to pay more, which would include North Wilkesboro residents.

Just like we all saw when Lowes left.

I wish they would do a by pass, but they will not, I think it would save many Wilkes county lives if one was built. But I do not know how the person thinks a by pass would hurt wilkesboro. It would probably go in the vicinity close to where it is now. No way would it be in NW. the business would still be in Wilkesboro.

Since you brought up Jonesville and Elkin, there has been some consolidation.

First the Town's of Jonesville and Arlington where separate Towns and they merged in 2001.

Second the Town's of Jonesville and Elkin have combined some services; for example, the sewer systems. The two Town's where able to eliminate one Wastewater Treatment Plant by consolidating the systems, which was a big savings.

If the state moves forward with building the bypass around 421, Wilkesboro will lose a HUGE tax base. If the towns merge then the residents of North Wilkesboro would be left paying the taxes for the businesses that either leave or aren't paying in as much.

I still haven't heard any way that merging the towns would help me.

Can one just imagine though, a cozy little Big Town with a Copper Barrel and a Pipe Dream all within...

Other costs to consider are all the signage that would have to be changed. Also, I'm not sure how the Postal service handles it but, how will mailing addresses be resolved? Will North Wilkesboro keep it's zip code for clarity?

For those preaching Wilkesboro's superiority.... two words: Lake Taco. The ONLY thing keeping Wilkesboro from collapsing is 421, which is quickly being absorbed by an ever growing hole in the ground. Unfortunately, North Wilkesboro has had years of horrible leadership, with a current Mayor who's only interest is keeping insurance and benefits on himself. We've had a hair-brained town manager(now resigned), an inept town planner(now gone), on top of a Chamber of Commerce who does absolutely NOTHING to build up the towns or county. I'm really hoping hard for the new Manager and Planner to do good things but, they can only do so much. I found it amusing that neither Mayor commented in regards to the proposal.

While the article had bullet points to the potential positives of a consolidation, I feel many of them are just wishful thinking. The best positive I saw was the potential for better grant opportunities and using the combined size to "potentially" attract business yet, again these were just fleeting possibilities.

I'm not opposed to a study however, I don't see why it should cost $50-70k whether tax or privately funded.

Surry and Yadkin should combine Elkin and Jonesville and let's see how that pans out!

Why is the first question someone asks is " what is in it for me".

I'm not sure why else anyone would care. Who cares if the towns save money, if it's not passed on to the taxpayer? Let's spend another $100,000 of OUR money on another study (like they did with the Bike Sharing program) to find out what we already know... it will have minimal impact and not really help any of us.

According to Governing.com, they rarely save any money or see any financial benefit at all:

So again, other than spending money on a study, what's the advantage, and to who?

422 so far is asking for a study.

Yeah, but out of 8,000 voters in the two towns, that's only 5%... assuming they even live in the towns. I suspect a lot of them are Palmer's friends and family. Without an opposing petition, we have no way of knowing whether the other 7,600 oppose it.

I think I agree with foxnose.

The two towns will never merge. It would be like merging the Republican Party with the Democrat Party. Simply ain't gonna happen.
