Way way back, when I was a short order at Hadley's, the first thing he taught me to say when someone ordered a burger was " now what was it you wanted on that burger, we want to get it right!" Most folks did not want their sandwich fixed, they wanted a new one and there went the profit. Everyone had a different idea when they ordered "All the way."

Depends. When I was a kid we could order "American Style" which was mustard, onion and dill pickle. Cheese messed that up.

Ordering a hamburger all the way is not an acceptable term. That term was for a place and time and that time has expired, and the place is closed..The only place I ever bought a hamburger and ordered it all the way was the original Goodwill burger. All the way meant mustard and slaw on the bread burger. Sometimes the lady would ask you if you wanted it all the way and sometimes she just assumed. You may (and should) order a hot dog all the way but not a hamburger

Will never forget ordering a hot dog all the way out west. They looked at me and said "do you mean mustard and chili?" They had never heard of a hot dog with slaw, chili and onions. Man, did I miss my hot dogs.

Back then, I did have one guy that wanted me to put everything on it. He was a buddy of mine, so we had fun and put literally everything! That burger was easily 10" thick when we were done with it!

He ate it, though, and swore it was the best burger he'd ever had

I loved that guy, I hate that we lost touch. He was one of those super positive guys that you really just need in your life sometimes.

All the way for a hotdog is a local thing too. Hotdogs vary greatly depending on which part of the country you are in.

All the way basically means everything, for that one restaurant. There is no standard.

Back in my burger-flippin' days, "all the way" meant "all the way like a hot dog"; eg, mustard, chili, slaw, and chopped onions (which I think is commonly called a Carolina burger now, but that's seems to be a recent thing). But some people meant lettuce tomato and mayo, and some included onions, so we always had to clarify.

Funny enough, every time I asked to clarify, the customer would act like I was a huge . They obviously meant... whichever version they expected me to automagically know.

I still prefer all-the-way-like-a-hotdog, but it's HARD to find good chili! So more often than not I get it with cheddar or Pepper jack cheese, spicy mustard, pickles, lettuce, onions, jalapenos, and avocado if they have it (tomato if they don't).

The ones that always killed me, "I'd like a cheeseburger, hold the cheese"

I dunno, you ever order a Whopper from BK? Standard is lettuce, tomato, onions pickles, ketchup, mayonnaise. Seems all American and all the way to me.

All the way never means chili and slaw. That's a Carolina specialty. And lettuce tomato and mayo are really a southern thing, not a national style. The all American option would be ketchup mustard pickles and onions. All the way really depends on the restaurant. There is no standard. All the way used to be a common order style, but it's not really something people use much anymore.

Southern style is chili, slaw, mustard and onions; All American is lettuce, tomato, mayo and possibly onion.

depends on their background
some mean it's chili, slaw, mustard onions, some mean every single condiment you can throw at it.
to me, it's lettuce tomato, mayonnaise, ketchup, onions, pickles, mustard.

my favorite burger is still covered in jalapenos, bacon, spicy mayo, lettuce, bacon, tomato, spicy mustard, bacon, a slice short of a brick of cheese, grilled onions, and the burger has to be soaking wet with Worcestershire.

When someone orders a burger "all the way", what do you think that means? What toppings / condiments would be on that burger?
