Industry awards are jokes. They are handed out by people that can't create on their own and get off on pretending they are more enlightened and more hip that the rest of society.
I'd say given that his net worth is estimated at $25 million and the fact that he has been romantically linked to desirable women such as Rose McGowan, Dita Von Teese and Evan Rachel Wood ... his career turned out just fine.

Some of his music isn't bad, in my opinion. Be that as it may, I would think that his career downfall is that his music and his public persona aren't commercially friendly. If it wasn't for music videos the success that he did have, in terms of popularity, would have been even more diminished. He was a fad, like 2 Live Crew. He was taboo, so some peeps were drawn to his music for that reason. Be that as it may, you can't stand in direct opposition to commercialism and then expect to be commercially successful in the long term. Less play means less pay.
