It's both! But I do often hear hear people refer to Mainland China as the area controlled by the PRC which excludes Hong Kong. So I can see why one might think it's geographically separate from the rest of China even though it only partially is.

Well Hong Kong island is not attached to large portions of Hong Kong. The question, as I understood it, asked if Hong Kong was attached to mainland China.
