According to Andrew Palmer, the benefits of consolidating the towns are: � Possibly allow for better planning. One stronger, unified town could allow better planning for the future and help address issues more effectively, including steps to create jobs and stimulate the local economy. � Could improve cost effectiveness, efficiency. One police department, one public works department and one administration could result in more efficient services, cut costs and result in lower taxes. Better economies of scale could reduce costs of purchases. It could mean faster emergency response times. � Possible better chances for grants. Progressive action resulting in one town of nearly 8,000 could garner more attention for state and other funding. � Enhance marketing. Being one larger town rather than two smaller towns could allow for more effective marketing and avoid the confusion people from elsewhere sometimes experience here. � Create excitement. Consolidation could result in a new sense of civic pride and excitement, bringing positive results. That's all good, but there's nothing about how it helps ME, as a resident. I have a job, so the town getting grants or doing more marketing doesn't do anything for me.
Combining services is great, but I have no choice but to pay for water, sewer, trash collection, and leaf collection... they're not included in my taxes or anything. We would need the same number of people working in those departments, so other than eliminating a single department head I don't imagine a lot of money saved. So the rate doesn't go down, and my taxes stay the same.
Like someone else said, we can't eliminate a fire department or police department and then take longer to respond, so we'll still have those. Even if we didn't, would the plan be to build new ones in the middle? That's more money, not less.
So what's in it for ME?

The leaders of both municipalities and the county have a responsibility and charge to be fiscally responsible. It's imperative that they put the good of the whole, the people, before themselves. Some cooperation between the towns and county is evident but much more is needed.
To start, it's obvious that the huge capital requirements of the fire departments should prompt a close examination. It's likely that one expensive ladder truck, for example, could serve a much larger radius than the one in North Wilkesboro currently does. The move to shared services is a good start but that needs to progress.
The county and the towns should explore a sanitary district for waterworks. With combined resources, the intake at the lake might be possible. If not, one large intake and treatment facility would be cheaper, of course.
One can go down the line and address law enforcement, etc. Let's hope for that. Avowed conservatism demands it.
Regardless, it's encouraging to see a young man work for the people and show no fear in doing so. Let's trust that more experienced hands will work with him to provide better and cheaper services to all taxpayers. If a merger would save money, the leaders need to facilitate it or get out of the way.

That is funny. Boycott Wilkesboro and you would not have hardly anywhere to shop in Wilkes or to eat. But who cares?? Sounds like when the towns started, the people still hate each other. Guess things have not changed at all.

Well, if it is donated money, you cannot tell people what to do with their money. If it is town money, it seems NW has made some really bad choices in spending before. Selling property for small amount, turning around and buying it for a huge increase. Buying 3 or 4 tracts of land without a plan on how it would be used and and if it would be used. Probably a small amount of money when you think of the amount of taxes they take in. And I agree that it is not a great deal for the town of Wilkesboro, but if it would benefit the combined towns in getting grants, it would be worth it to benefit this area.

Metaltrucker, if you are serious about this and not in fact trolling why don't you actually make some statements that are coherent and add to the discussion. I read about the initiative and came here to learn more and see what people are saying. So far I've seen some thoughtful responses for and against that I had not thought of.
You are obviously passionate about this but so far all you've really done is insult Andrew Palmer and point out that the money for the study could be better spent (a fair argument). Would love to know Your actual reasons and why you think this would hurt the area.

It's a shame. But,I've voiced my opinions. That $70,000 would be better used. For our schools and kids.
I'm done with this,it's useless. I'll leave with this. Better open your eyes neighbors. When N Wilkesboro troubles are laid in Wilkesboro laps. Dont say nobody warned you. Now watch the powers sway. The WORLD is watching.
