What they are trying to do is against the law if it is passed I suspect there will be years of law suits of this.

No, legal gun owners being convicted of crimes and illegally keeping their firearms isn't an issue

shouldawouldacoulda (view profile) | Posted 3:29 pm, 05/25/2016 | What exactly are you accusing Robinson of lying about? Or being too stupid to know? The database informs Hawaiian officials if registered gun owners living in the state commit a crime elsewhere. If the crime disqualifies them for gun ownership, now officials will know instantly

...you know SWC, there really is something to that. Even though background checks are made on all individuals who purchase weapons, what if they decide to sell it? or someone steals it to commit a robbery?....ATF can trace that firearm back as many years as needed to find the original owner but firearms change hands in some places more than some peeps change drawers.

I mean an open carry state is fine, but what will that help if you are blindsided?.....if you are not locked and loaded where's the time?

I am not a gun nut either...I own one and one is enough. It's possible I might not live til tomorrow but evenif some SOB comes in on me, who would live 50 more years....why is his 50 more important than my one?

We already know who the gun nuts are. They paid $1500 for a $400 gun, $500 for $120 worth of ammo, $50 for the CC Class and $80 to the government to put them on the nut list, all in an open carry State.
I have a conceal handgun permit.....I've been checked by the state, federal and it shows up when they pull me and do a license check.....I make no excuses......I care not who likes it....it's an ugly, ugly world.

Gun owners committing crimes isn't a real problem?

I do have a problem with it, because I don't think the problem that they are listing for the reason of said database is real. I think it's something created to get this passed

As for Robinson, I think you may be hung up on semantics. There are background checks in Hawaii, yes. We're all in agreement. The database enables officials to obtain information concerning crimes committed by owners that may disqualify them from future ownership.
That can't possibly be a bad idea.

I believe were talking about two different things.
Do you have a problem with the idea of the database?

Reread the first sentence. He says they only undergo a background check when they register. How do you not get that is incorrect?

Gun registry is a very dangerous threat. History hath shewn that these have been invariably used to disarm the populace.

That's what Robinson wants to use the database for: To see if a crime disqualifies a previously-registered owner from ownership.

"Right now, Hawaii gun owners undergo a background check only when they register a gun, so police have no way of knowing if they're disqualified from owning a gun in the future unless they try to register a new firearm."

That's what Robinson, and police officials want. Seems logical.

I don't know, he could be lying.
But, even you should know that the federal laws require a background check on all purchases. This doesn't change just because the location is not part of the mainland. A state doesn't get to opt out. So, background checks already happen. What you may not be knowledgable on, Hawaii requires gun permits before a resident can buy any gun in the state of Hawaii. The process to get a purchase permit requires a background check. And as I already said, Hawaii has had firearm registration in place since at least 1995. I would have to research the matter to see if it went back before that. All firearms must be registered through the local police department upon any purchase or if you move to the state of Hawaii.

So, just so I get this straight, you know more about Hawaii and the law in that state than an Hawaiian police officer acting as a departmental spokesperson in this matter?
You can possibly see where that seems...problematic?
