And KonGoogle defers.

Actually, anti, there is a direct reference to slaves, probably referring to slaves who fought for their own freedom when offered the opportunity.

And here's even more information concerning that specific passage and Key himself, who, let's just say, may be a controversial figure in his own right.

However, from a different standpoint, there are simply much better songs out there for consideration. I would vote for "This Land is Your Land," but I suspect that might make some conservative heads explode. How about "America the Beautiful?"

scumbag swucy, given today's circumstances why do you feel we should scrap our national anthem?

Because they despise this country.

Dr. King's son disagrees with you, anti. So do the letters from a Birmingham jail.

Are you suggesting we scrap both works and work together in a spirit of unification to choose a new anthem that would better represent all Americans?

No, I'm suggesting that there's nothing divisive or exclusive about the national anthem (except maybe the "in God is our trust" part in the 4th verse, official in 1916, but there's no reference to race), so by creating a separate-but-equal anthem we're creating a social divide.

I remember the 60's, MLK, Jr, the Freedom Marchers. So many things changed for the better and now with the BLM and Antifa rioting, breaking store windows, looting, destruction of all kinds looks like things are going backwards.

Unfortunately, empowers, you're being misled. Most of the riots and looting has been from white supremacist organizations that are intentionally trying to make the protests look bad. This isn't a conspiracy theory, they openly discuss it on social media and there are videos showing it:

But I would agree that BLM is more like the Black Panthers than anything Dr. King had in mind.

"What's divisive about it?

Calling it the "black national anthem" implies that the real national anthem doesn't represent black people, and they need their own song.

"Separate but equal" is always divisive."

Are you suggesting we scrap both works and work together in a spirit of unification to choose a new anthem that would better represent all Americans?

I was comparing emps ignorance of Dr. King to the monument defenders.

hillbilly666

I'm not totally positive if we are on the same page or not but I think we are agreeing. Monuments typically offer no context or nuance the way a museum or book do. Also, don't most of these monuments just memorialize soldiers and the war itself l? They aren't typically historical markers explaining an event that took place on the site right?

Bestill

Posted 11:04 am, 07/04/2020

Well, it IS history. That is what museums are for.

hillbilly666

Posted 10:40 am, 07/04/2020

Yeah, we present such a warped inaccurate depiction of the civil war to begin with. I feel like calling most of those monuments historical is generous.

It's weird, right? It is like those folks that get their panties in a wad over the monument thing claiming it is History.
