He was a tough guy who liked to drink, liked to smoke, and loved to party but he was hardly a drunk or alcoholic.

John Wayne was also a raging alcoholic (hence stomach cancer). Almost all of his shots had to be filmed before noon because by then, he was a belligerent drunk.
The Searchers is easily a top five greatest film of all time, but it’s hilarious to see conservatives and evangelicals trot JW out as some embodiment of ethic and patriotism.

111 years ago on May 26, 1907, Marion Morrison, known professionally as John Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa. Some advice from the Duke in honor of his birthday:

“Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid.”

“A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do.”
John Wayne died in Los Angeles on June 11, 1979 after battling stomach cancer. He was 72 years old.
