The official role of a consul is to "facilitate trade and friendship between the people of the two countries." So when he says one thing but the family says something different, it calls his motive into question.

Results are expected in about a week, said Tekandi Paniagua, the Guatemalan consul in Del Rio, Texas.

Paniagua, who spoke with Jakelin's father, said the two had walked with the other migrants for about 90 minutes before crossing and Caal told him he had no complaints about how agents treated him and his daughte

Migrant girl's relatives dispute official story on her death

The family of a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl who died in U.S. Border Patrol custody is disputing an account from U.S. officials who said she had not been given food or water for days.

In a statement released by lawyers, the parents of Jakelin Caal said the girl had been given food and water and appeared to be in good health as she traveled through Mexico with her father, 29-year-old Nery Gilberto Caal Cuz. The family added that Jakelin had not been traveling through the desert for days before she was taken into custody.

...

Jakelin and her father were seeking asylum in the U.S. and were among a large group of migrants arrested Dec. 6 near a remote border crossing in New Mexico. Hours later they were placed on a bus to the nearest Border Patrol station, but Jakelin began vomiting and eventually stopped breathing. She later died at a Texas hospital.

Border Patrol officials on Friday said agents did everything they could to save the girl but that she had not had food or water for days. They added that an initial screening showed no evidence of health problems, and that her father had signed a form indicating she was in good health.

But the family took issue with that form, which was in English, a language her father doesn't speak or read. He communicated with border agents in Spanish but he primarily speaks the Mayan Q'eqchi' language.

"It is unacceptable for any government agency to have persons in custody sign documents in a language that they clearly do not understand," the statement said.

Jakelin's family is urging authorities to conduct an "objective and thorough" investigation into the death and to determine whether officials met standards for the arrest and custody of children.

A cause of death has not yet been released.

If I drive a GM vehicle down the road 120 miles a hour and hit a bridge and kill my daughter I guess that would be Trumps fought also being he cut there taxes and made it so they could make more profit.

There is only one person to blame for this and that is the girls father. He knowingly took his daughter on a trip through a dangerous area of land to break the law and failed to properly prepare for the trip. If he had done things the right and legal way she would be still alive.

@mtnlife. I can't speak for everyone else but if took my daughter on a deadly trip through the desert then I would dang sure take enough water for her.

They were provided access to water and food. When the father brought it to boarder patrol officials attention she was flown by helicopter to a hospital where she died 24 hrs later.

What more would you have done????

The girl and her father waited for several hours on the border for a transport bus to Lordsburg, New Mexico. The group they traveled with included about 50 unaccompanied minors, who received priority transportation to the nearest major Border Patrol station. They had access to water and restrooms during the time they were detained there, officials said.

The child initially appeared well, and her father signed a form declaring that she suffered no significant health problems, a Customs and Border Protection official said.

Once the father and daughter boarded the bus for the roughly three-hour trip to Lordsburg, the father told agents that his daughter had begun to vomit. The agent notified the station where the bus was headed to put medical personnel in place.

She “reportedly had not eaten or consumed water for several days,” Customs and Border Protection, the DHS agency that includes Border Patrol, told the Washington Post. Emergency responders measured her temperature at 105.7 degrees and took her by helicopter to the nearest trauma center, Providence Children’s Hospital in El Paso, agency officials said. There, she went into cardiac arrest and was revived for a time, according to CBP.

“There was no indication she had health conditions,” said the CBP official, adding that there were “plenty of opportunities during the period of time while in custody if [her] father noticed anything to bring to attention. He already had been asked about her health, [so he] knew it was something we were interested in.” water, food, and restrooms were available.

I haven't read the whole thread. This may have been already said.

This is bad that the kid died. But what really caused this ? Some are blaming the border security.

Now before you jump on your high horse. Being captain man and all . Put your self in there shoes ( border patrol )

You all the sudden have over 100 people turn there selves into your custody. All of them dehydrated and starving. Everyone asking for help. Do you think in this messed up situation that you could have missed the one child that was deathly ill ? When you start triage on that many people you will miss something. Maybe because someone is screaming for help more than a quite child.

People please think about what all is going on before you start bashing.

What part of they knew not to come do you people not understand? I feel sorry for them, but why do they think we can keep letting them come here, any of you know what our deficit is? Each illegal cost we the taxpayers $70,000. a year. This cannot be allowed to continue. Yes, we have the greatest country in the world but our ancestors made it that way. You all make all that have died in war and law enforcement a farce. Instead of caring about them, you care about illegals. Trump is always right, he tries his best but all he gets from most is a kick in the head. They probably raped that little girl to death before she got here, don't say it doesn't happen! How about waiting for the autopsy reports before you go blaming Trump for those that brought her here. They have a country, why don't they try to improve it instead of sponging off of us? Seems like if nothing else you would care about what your grandchildren will have or will there be money for SS? You're cutting off your nose to spite your face! You don't know if they gave her water or not, I'd say that was the first thing they did maybe, but sometimes giving someone dehydrated much fluids until she is properly diagnosed can be deadly. You all don't know crap but you're the judges of the world.

A few things here. I don’t think the border patrol carries enough water for 163 people at one time. How do you move 163 people to a single place to get them out of the heat? How long would it take to move 163 people? How long did they wonder around the desert before turning themselves in? Maybe they were abandoned by their human traffickers. Lots of things could have contributed to this tragedy. Making it harder to cross the border would definitely deter people from making this tragic trip that has killed many people.

Do you think 163 people carry enough water for 163 people? That's at least a gallon per for two days! Unless of course you are drinking your own urine or water is magically appearing in the mirages in the dessert or if it is appearing the holding places at these smuggler's holes. Blame where the blame needs blaming.

NO ONE is to blame except the immigrants that decided to put their children at risk
by bringing them. They all should have stayed home.

No @goddess it is nothing in comparison. The illegals knew it was illegal to come here to start off with. Yet the parents chose to come here and bring their children with them knowing what the chances were and what the laws were. Plain and simple. They think that bringing the kids are free meal tickets.

When did it become illegal to seek asylum here?
